Tank Stars

Tank Stars is a turn-based artillery game where every shot is a physics calculation — you pick a weapon, set your angle, adjust your power, and fire at an enemy tank across a 2D side-scrolling battlefield. The weapon variety is enormous, ranging from basic rockets to mini-nukes, freezing bombs, and drone strikes, and each tank you unlock comes with its own arsenal of unique abilities. Play it free in your browser on PLRun with no download required.

About Tank Stars

Tank Stars belongs to the artillery duel genre made famous by games like Scorched Earth and Worms, but it modernizes the formula with a deep progression system and over a dozen unlockable tanks. You and an opponent take turns positioning your tank, choosing from multiple weapons, and firing across hilly terrain where wind and elevation both affect your shot's trajectory. A direct hit with the right weapon can end a fight in one turn — a miss wastes your shot and hands the advantage back.

Developed by StoreRider and built with HTML5 (Unity WebGL), Tank Stars is a free online game that runs in your browser on desktop, mobile, and tablet. The progression loop between matches keeps sessions addictive: you earn coins, open chests containing upgrade cards, and pour resources into leveling up a tank's weapons until they hit noticeably harder. With 15 playable tanks — each carrying six unique weapons — there is genuine depth to build around. If you enjoy strategic turn-based combat or artillery-style destruction, this browser game delivers both in quick rounds.

On mobile, both steering and aiming use on-screen joysticks, and a tap on the Fire button launches your shot. The aiming joystick controls both angle (0–90°) and power (1–100), so small adjustments to the drag distance and direction make a significant difference in where your projectile lands.

How a Match Works

Each match is a 1v1 duel across a 2D terrain of hills, valleys, and flat stretches. You and your opponent alternate turns. On your turn, you can reposition your tank left or right to find a better angle, select one of your available weapons, aim using the joystick, and fire. After your projectile lands — dealing damage, missing, or creating a crater in the terrain — the turn passes to your opponent.

A match ends when one tank's health reaches zero. Terrain is destructible, so craters from previous shots reshape the battlefield as the fight progresses. A weapon that missed on turn one might have cleared a hill that was blocking your line of fire, opening up a direct hit on turn two.

Weapons and Tank Selection

Each of the 15 tanks carries a unique set of six weapons. The Frost tank, for example, has Frostblast (single ice rocket), Frostbite (a freezing ground attack), Assault Drones (a flare that calls down drone fire), Blizzard (a rain of icy projectiles), High Pressure (short-range expanding fireball), and Ice Splitter (short-range chain attack). Every tank's arsenal mixes long-range, short-range, area-of-effect, and specialty attacks, so the tank you choose shapes your entire tactical approach.

You start with the Abrams as your default tank. Others — like the Frost (1,000 coins), Blazer, Atomic Tank, Toxic Tank, and Spectre — are unlocked with coins or gems earned through play. Some weapons are best at close range while others arc over hills. Switching weapons between turns to match the situation is a core skill.

Upgrades and Progression

After each battle, you earn coins and open chests that contain upgrade cards. Cards are tied to specific weapons on specific tanks. Stack enough cards for one weapon and you can level it up, increasing its damage and blast radius. Chests come in tiers — epic and legendary chests yield stronger cards. The progression system rewards focusing your upgrades on a single tank rather than spreading resources across your whole garage.

Tank Stars Tips and Strategies

  1. Invest all upgrade cards into one tank early: Spreading coins and cards across multiple tanks produces a roster of mediocre loadouts. Pick one tank — Frost and Toxic are widely considered top-tier — and pour every resource into maxing its weapons. A fully upgraded Frost with leveled Frostbite can one-shot opponents, while a level-1 spread across five tanks cannot.
  2. Reposition before every shot: Moving your tank costs nothing and often opens up a completely different angle on the enemy. A few steps to the right might let you fire over a hill that was blocking your path, or move you out of a crater that was trapping your shots. Players who fire from the same position every turn are leaving easy damage on the table.
  3. Use terrain destruction to your advantage: A missed shot is not always wasted. If a hill is blocking your line to the enemy, fire a high-damage weapon into it to carve a gap. On the next turn, you can shoot through the opening with a precision weapon. Thinking two turns ahead — using the first to reshape terrain, the second to land a direct hit — is what separates experienced players from beginners.
  4. Match your weapon to the range: Long-range weapons like Frostbite or standard rockets are for when the enemy is far away. Short-range weapons like High Pressure deal massive damage but require you to be close. Selecting a close-range weapon when the enemy is across the map wastes your turn. Before aiming, check the distance and choose accordingly.
  5. Aim slightly behind the target with area weapons: Weapons like Assault Drones and Blizzard rain projectiles down around a landing point. Landing the flare directly on the enemy sometimes causes the spread to miss forward. Placing it just behind the target ensures the spread covers the tank fully. This small adjustment dramatically increases your total damage per volley.
  6. Account for wind before every shot: A wind indicator appears before each turn. Strong wind can push your projectile several meters off target, which matters more for high-arc, long-range shots. Adjust your aim into the wind — if wind blows right, aim slightly left of your target — to compensate. Ignoring wind is the most common reason otherwise well-aimed shots miss completely.
  7. Save your strongest weapon for when you have a clear line: It is tempting to use your best ability immediately, but if terrain or distance makes a direct hit unlikely, you are wasting your highest-damage option on a low-percentage shot. Use a weaker weapon to test your aim or clear terrain first, then fire your strongest weapon when you are confident it will connect.
