Between levels, you strengthen your heroes through two systems. The rune system lets you customize each hero's role, turning a generalist into a specialist for certain world types.
Pets unlock once a hero reaches maximum level. Each pet fights alongside its hero automatically, adding extra damage or support effects. The pet system gives you a long-term progression goal beyond just clearing levels — fully evolving a hero and unlocking their pet meaningfully increases your power for hard mode and tournament play.
New players tend to spend all their gold on towers and ignore their heroes. Your three heroes are your most flexible resource — they can be repositioned instantly, their abilities deal burst damage, and they can plug gaps that towers cannot cover. Before placing a new tower, ask whether moving a hero to that spot would solve the problem for free.
A level-3 Archer tower dramatically outperforms three level-1 Archers. Upgraded towers gain increased range, damage, and sometimes new effects. Spreading gold across many low-level towers leaves you with weak coverage everywhere. Focus on fully upgrading towers at key chokepoints first, then expand your defense line outward.
Infantry towers place blockers on the path, forcing enemies to stop and fight. While enemies are stalled, your Archers and Magic towers keep firing. Placing an Infantry tower at a path bend where two Archer towers and a Magic tower overlap creates a concentrated kill zone where enemies spend the most time under fire. This synergy is far more effective than distributing towers evenly along the entire path.
Boss enemies have massive health pools and often resist tower damage. When a boss wave arrives, pull all three heroes onto the boss and cycle their abilities. The combined burst damage from three heroes using abilities simultaneously can strip a boss's health faster than your towers alone. Let your towers handle the smaller enemies that accompany the boss wave — your heroes should focus the biggest threat.
Early waves are manageable with basic towers and hero abilities. Resist the urge to spend all your gold immediately. Later waves introduce armored enemies, fast runners, and flying units that punish underprepared defenses. Keeping a gold reserve lets you react — upgrading a tower mid-wave or building an emergency Infantry blocker — instead of watching helplessly as enemies break through.
Icy kingdom enemies behave differently from underground tunnel enemies. Before entering a new world, review which runes boost abilities most effective against that world's enemy types. Equipping fire-based runes for ice worlds or area runes for tunnel levels where enemies cluster tightly gives you a meaningful advantage over using a generic loadout everywhere.
